I was very honoured to meet Elsa Nega and shoot her story for the Globe and Mail. The Vancouver mother of two, originally from Ethiopia, needs a bone marrow transplant to beat the leukaemia that has struck her. But the international registry of donors, including the “OneMatch” system in Canada, carries very few fellow Africans for her to find a compatible donor. Her story has gained a lot of media attention, and some 1,000 people have completed buccal “cheek smears” to determine their eligibility for bone marrow matches. But sadly, still no match.
